On the evening of July 4th, 2026, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois police dog named Santi was startled by illegal fireworks near his home in Clovis, California. Terrified by the explosions, he jumped his fence, ran into traffic, and was struck by a vehicle. The driver left without stopping. Santi didn't survive.

Santi wasn't just a pet. He was a working K-9 with the Fresno County Sheriff's Office — a trained partner who served his community. He spent his off-duty hours with the deputy he called home, in a neighborhood where people chose to set off illegal fireworks anyway. He never had a chance.

Someone drove away from that scene. They left a police dog dying in the street and didn't look back. That is a hit-and-run, and it demands accountability.

The Clovis Police Department is investigating. We are calling on them to identify and charge the driver responsible for Santi's death — and to pursue consequences for whoever set off the illegal fireworks that sent him running into traffic in the first place.

Santi served his community. Now it's time for his community to demand justice for him.
