Justice for Raygun the Baboon!

Petition for Justice: Hold Botleng Secondary School Accountable for the Brutal Killing of Raygun the Baboon

We, the undersigned, are deeply disturbed by the recent incident at Botleng Secondary School in Delmas, where students brutally attacked and killed a baboon known as Raygun. This act of cruelty not only reflects on the individuals involved but also raises serious concerns about the school's oversight and responsibility in preventing such behaviour.

Educational institutions have a duty to foster environments that promote respect, empathy, and ethical behaviour. The failure to prevent or address such a heinous act indicates a lapse in the school's management and governance. According to the Department of Basic Education's "Strategy to Improve School Management and Governance in Schools," effective leadership is crucial in guiding schools towards success and instilling moral values in students.

We demand the following actions be taken to hold Botleng Secondary School accountable and to prevent future occurrences:

1. Administrative Accountability: The school's administration must conduct an internal investigation to determine how such an incident was allowed to occur on school premises and under their supervision.

2. Policy Implementation: The school should develop and enforce strict policies against animal cruelty, ensuring that all students and staff are aware of the ethical and legal implications of such actions.

3. Community Engagement: The school must engage with local animal welfare organisations to facilitate programs that educate students on the importance of wildlife conservation and humane treatment of animals.

4. Regular Audits and Reporting: Implement regular audits of the school's policies and practices related to student behavior and ethics, with transparent reporting to the school community and relevant authorities.

By signing this petition, we call for immediate action by the Department of Basic Education, to hold Botleng Secondary School accountable for this tragic incident. We believe that enforcing accountability within educational institutions is essential for fostering a culture of respect and responsibility towards animals, among students.

Justice for Raygun is not only about addressing this singular act of cruelty but also about ensuring that the Department of Basic Education uphold the values of compassion and integrity in schools.
