Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones of Kristen Marie Kovatch for this tragic and extremely rare incident.

The two young subadult mountain lions involved were likely inexperienced hunters still learning from a mother. Tragically, no media reports or CPW updates have addressed the possibility that these orphans lost their mother, potentially to trophy hunting or other causes.

Trophy hunting mountain lions, especially females, disrupts family structures and orphans dependent young. These subadults often struggle to hunt natural prey like deer, leading to desperation, starvation, and higher risks of conflicts with pets, livestock, or even people.

Research shows that trophy hunting can destabilize lion populations, skewing them toward younger, less skilled animals and increasing human-wildlife conflicts, not reducing them.

Killing adult lions (particularly mothers) creates voids filled by inexperienced juveniles who are more likely to take risks near humans.

Key questions remain unanswered:

👉What was in the stomachs of these subadults during necropsy? (No reports yet mention contents, which could reveal if they were starving.)

👉Two adult female lions were recently trophy hunted with hounds in this hunting unit. CPW requires these killers to submit a tooth from every killed lion, making DNA matching feasible to confirm if one of these killed females was their mother.

If trophy hunting contributed to the orphaning of these lions and ultimately led to this attack, CPW must reassess its support for this practice. The biggest threat to human safety isn't hiking in lion country, it's destabilizing lion families through hunting, which research links to greater risks for people.

Houndsmen and trophy hunters claim we need to kill more lions for safety, but evidence shows the opposite: destabilization from removing adults heightens conflicts.

We urge CPW to investigate:
👉DNA testing of recent lion kills in the area to determine if the lions killed in this region were related to the subadults

Insist on full necropsy details (including stomach contents) and DNA comparisons for harvested lions in the unit. Our safety depends on understanding root causes—not perpetuating a system that may heighten risks.
