We condemn the brutal violence against Assistant Professor Sanjay Kumar of Motihari Central University, Bihar, on August 17th, 2018. He was lynched and attempts were made to burn him to death in retaliation for a comment on the death of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee that he made on social media. The Motihari Central University Teacher's Association has strongly condemned the mob attack and has accused the Vice Chancellor of the University for aiding and abetting the violence against Prof. Kumar.

Sanjay Kumar is currently fighting for his life. We urge the government (the Chief Minister of Bihar and the HRD Ministry) to take immediate action against the perpetrators of the crime and to issue a statement of condemnation. The attack through mob violence on Prof. Kumar comes in the wake of the increasing repression of academic expression and dissent in the country. We urge all academics, scholars and students in India and abroad to come out in support of Prof. Kumar and to ensure that such incidents are never allowed to happen again.
