A K-9 officer is more than a police dog—they are a loyal partner, a public servant, and a valued member of the law enforcement community. The recent death of a Pitt County K-9 “Chilli” at the hands of its handler has left many members of the public heartbroken and searching for answers.

As citizens, we recognize that investigations must be conducted fairly and thoroughly. At the same time, transparency is essential to maintaining public trust.

We respectfully call on the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office to:

• Provide the public with a clear update regarding the status of the investigation.
• Explain whether the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave or is facing any disciplinary action, if that information can legally be released.
• Release, when legally appropriate, the findings of the investigation so the public understands what occurred and what actions are being taken.
• Demonstrate that all individuals, regardless of their position, are held accountable under the law.

This petition is not about rushing to judgment. It is about ensuring transparency, accountability, and justice for a K-9 who faithfully served the community.

The public deserves to know that this matter is being handled with the seriousness it warrants. We ask Pitt County officials to communicate openly with the community and ensure that the investigation is conducted fairly and thoroughly.
