Justice for NUR 283 at Galen College of Nursing
The Issue
As concerned students currently enrolled in Galen College of Nursing of the academic year 2024, I am petitioning to address a pressing issue that has significantly impacted us.
Last quarter of 2023, students raised concerns regarding the grading practices employed by Galen, which unfortunately, persist to this day. Galen is implementing a grading system that disregards our actual ATI scores, instead opting to assign a pass or fail status based on benchmarks. Specifically, Galen inputs a 0% for any score below the 74 benchmark, deeming it a failure, and assigns a 100% for any score surpassing 74, classifying it as a pass.
This methodology not only undermines the efforts and achievements of students but also jeopardizes our academic standing. We firmly believe that our grades should accurately reflect our performance and merit, rather than being subjected to arbitrary judgments that lack transparency and fairness.
Therefore, we demand action to rectify these issues and ensure fair grading practices, academic integrity, and a conducive learning environment for all students. We urge the implementation of an equitable grading system that considers our actual ATI scores or adopts a balanced distribution model, such as 30%/30%/30% or 30%/35%/35% to accurately reflect our performance.
For the previous quarter, grades were adjusted from a 0% to 100% if they had one passing ATI score to achieve the full 10%. We are not asking for altered grades. We are asking for our actual ATI scores to be posted for our grade in place of the 0% that Galen believes we deserve. This is altering grades by entering a 0% that we did not score and therefore failing us. We would even be grateful for the removal of one failed ATI score.
We deserve justice, transparency, and the opportunity to achieve our academic goals without fear of retaliation.
