We demand justice for Nico, a horse violently whipped 42 times by Australian Olympian Heath Ryan.

 

In shocking footage recently made public, Heath Ryan is seen savagely whipping a horse named Nico during a training session. Nico flinches, flees, and clearly shows signs of distress. This is not discipline — this is cruelty.

While Ryan defends his actions as part of a “rescue,” this level of evil force is neither humane nor acceptable. Violence should never be tolerated — especially by those in leadership roles within elite sports.

Equestrian Australia has suspended Ryan, but this is not enough. Animal cruelty laws exist for a reason, and they must be enforced. If the law has been broken, prison time must be considered. If the system is failing to protect animals, reform is needed.

We demand:

1. A full investigation by Equestrian Australia and state authorities
2. Public release of investigation findings
3. Legal accountability under relevant animal cruelty laws
4. Stronger enforcement and oversight in equestrian sport
5. A permanent ban on individuals who abuse animals
