Iya Edais and Sereen Edais started this petition to JUSTICE FOR MUNIR EDAIS and

The Edais family is requesting Daly City Police Department open an investigation into the suspicious death of Los Gatos Police Officer, Munir Edais.

On January 21st, 2020 at around 5:15 am, Mustafa Edais (Munir’s father) received a phone call from Mohammad Yasin (Munir’s brother-in-law) saying “BRACE YOURSELF, MUNIR HUNG HIMSELF”. The Yasin family lives in Union City; approximately 45 minutes away from Daly City. When the call was made to Munirs’ father, the Yasin family had already been at the apartment shared by Munir and Eman.  Munir Edais was a Daly City resident and had been for over 30 years. Munirs’ family are Daly City residents as well and lived only 10 minutes away from the shared apartment.

When the Edais family arrived at the apartment, they noticed no emergency personnel outside. There were no ambulances, firefighters, or police. Once they were allowed inside the apartment, they asked where Munir was. Eman Yasin (Munirs’ wife) informed the Edais family that the SMC (San Mateo County Coroner) had already taken Munir’s body and said he died at 2 am. The Edais family was informed of their loved ones passing 3 hours and 15 minutes later at 5:15 am.

Eman Yasin’s two brothers, Aymen Yasin and Mohammad Yasin were already in the apartment with Eman, by the time the Edais family arrived.

Once the Edais family was able to get the police report, 6 months later, it was noted the two Yasin brothers who were on the scene were Mohammed Yasin and Mahmoud Yasin. Why was there no mention of Aymen Yasin? Why did Mahmoud Yasin pretend to just arrive at the apartment as the Edais family was leaving?

Where was the ambulance? Where were the paramedics? Where was the investigation for an active duty police officer?

Daly City Police Officer Lorena Reyes arrived on the scene shortly after the 911 call and paged the San Mateo County Coroners’ office at 2:47 am. Officer Reyes already made up her mind about Munir's death being a suicide without an investigation. She said, “at approximately 0247, I requested the San Mateo County Coroners Office to be paged to my cell phone. Deputy Coroner Holly Benedict #15 called me and I advised her of the details to this case”. Officer Reyes never secured the scene and didn’t remove Eman Yasin or her family from the apartment. In the police report, Eman Yasin repeatedly said Munir's death was "her fault" but did not disclose why. The Edais family as well as professional audio forensics listened to the 911 call and were able to confirm a male voice in close proximity to Eman; coaching her on what to say and do. The police officers didn't do anything with that information nor open a real investigation. In bedroom 2 of Munir’s apartment, was a nanny cam placed by Munir. This was not collected by Daly City police officers at the time of Munir’s death. Why was the nanny cam not collected? Investigations require specific methods depending on circumstances and should be handled in accordance with the Death Investigations Policy; The handling officer should notify and notify a supervisor of the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine how to proceed. The following cases shall be appropriately investigated and documented using the approved report: (a) Sudden or accidental deaths. (b) Suicides. (c) Homicide or suspected homicide.

The family is requesting that Daly City manager Shawanna Maltbie, DCPD chief of Police Cameron Christensen, Mayor Rod Magbual, Vice-mayor Raymond Buenaventura, council members Glen Sylvester, Pamela DiGiovanni, and Juslyn Manalo open an investigation into his death.

As Daly City residents for over 40 years, the Edais family expects nothing less from our city-appointed officials and police department.

Munir was someone’s father, brother, and son. His death was suspicious and he deserves justice.
