Justice for Moureen
Why this petition matters

On the 7th of September, 2022 Moureen Anyango lost her life after childbirth due to negligence by nurses at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. Moureen is survived by her husband Robert Omondi and two beautiful bouncing baby boys.
The concerns around the affairs at the Mama Lucy Level Four Hospital are nothing new, In 2018, a Nairobi City County Assembly committee report revealed the poor state of affairs at the Hospital. The report cited the congestion of patients, lack of adequate equipment, and inefficient management of the institution and procedures. The hospital was also said to suffer insufficient medical equipment’s and staffing besides demoralized staff. The report, tabled before the assembly, said that the hospital has a bed capacity of 112 which is contrary to what is expected of a level four hospital. It also added that the hospital is meant to serve approximately one million residents living in the Eastland’s parts of Nairobi but had a mortuary that could only handle eight bodies. As purported to serve the Eastlands region, this hospital has assumed the role of a referral facility to other areas, especially the informal settlement areas of Nairobi. It is also noted that this is where the Community Healthcare Volunteers take their patients too. In the current NCC’s FY/2022/2023, there is a facelift on Mama Lucy to be upgraded to Level 4 despite the unaddressed concerns. Recently, Governor Sakaja visited the hospital and cited similar issues. Tragically things have not changed since 2018 and lives are being lost!
This petition calls upon the Office of the Nairobi City County Governor to ensure that medical personnel treat patients humanely and are guided by the Hippocratic oath. It additionally calls on Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital to ensure that the nursing department effects changes that reflect the utmost care to patients.
The petition calls on Nairobi City County, the Ministry of
Health and all relevant duty bearers and agencies to support streamlining medical care in Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital ensuring that the public is served with respect and dignity. The bare minimum that expectant mothers can be subjected to is reliable, accessible and dignified healthcare service delivery.
