In just four days, we will honor Oakley Carlson on what should have been her 8th birthday—a day that also marks 3 years since she was discovered missing by law enforcement. Despite numerous calls and emails from concerned community members, the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (WA DCYF) failed to act to protect her. Oakley deserved better. She deserved a childhood free from abuse and neglect, where the adults in her life safeguarded her well-being. Instead, she was tragically failed by the very system meant to protect her.
We are deeply grateful for your continued support in urging Governor Jay Inslee to conduct an immediate, independent review of Oakley’s WA DCYF case. Your voices have been instrumental in amplifying Oakley’s story, and we are humbled by your solidarity. With your help, we are determined to reach our goal of 10,000 signatures on the petition.
As Washington State welcomes a new Governor-elect, Bob Ferguson, we see an opportunity for renewed hope and action. In his current role as Attorney General, AG Ferguson was made aware of Oakley’s case during our initial phone and email campaign. At the time, his office responded that this matter fell outside the scope of the Attorney General’s jurisdiction, advising us to contact the Governor instead. Now, as Governor-elect, AG Ferguson has the authority and power to intervene. We plan to remind him of this responsibility and urge him to take meaningful action for Oakley—a responsibility he can no longer brush aside. We remain hopeful that he will demonstrate greater empathy and leadership in addressing this case.
In Oakley’s honor, we ask you to help us spread her story far and wide this week. Please share this petition on your social media platforms and encourage others to join in raising awareness. Together, we can continue to fight for the justice that Oakley deserved and ensure her memory is not forgotten.
Thank you for your unwavering support.
