Justice for Mikayla: Hold Social Media Platforms Accountable for Bullying

Justice for Mikayla: Hold Social Media Platforms Accountable for Bullying
The Issue
Mikayla Raines, founder of SaveAFox Rescue, dedicated her life to saving animals—especially misunderstood and discarded foxes. Her work brought joy, education, and compassion to millions. But behind the scenes, Mikayla was being harassed, stalked, and bullied—online and offline—for doing what she loved.
In June 2025, Mikayla took her own life. The relentless cruelty she endured online played a significant role in her death.
This is not an isolated tragedy. Animal rescuers, nonprofit workers, and public advocates around the world face burnout, bullying, and harassment every day—often from within their own communities. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and YouTube continue to fail those on the front lines of compassion.
We are demanding that these platforms take IMMEDIATE action to protect those who protect others:
We call on Meta (Facebook & Instagram), X, TikTok, and YouTube to:
1. Establish a verified status/support path for registered rescues and nonprofits
2. Provide expedited review and takedown of harassment complaints
3. Use AI to detect and flag coordinated bullying/dogpiling behavior
4. Offer "burnout mode" tools to pause public engagement without penalty
5. Permanently ban repeat harassers and those organizing smear campaigns
6. Publicly acknowledge the role social media harassment played in Mikayla's death—and pledge to protect others in her name
