Justice for Michael & family.
The Issue
This is my cousin. Michael Eide. And five years ago today he took his last breath. He had been sober for a while, relapsed, and started using for a few months before he overdosed on some bad dope laced with fentanyl.
The last time I saw him was at a celebration for MY 2 year anniversary of being clean from heroin. His literal last words to me were along the lines of:
“Someday I wish to be as strong as you.”
A month later, he was dead.
Let that sink in.
Most addicts don’t actually want to die. What I like to compare it to is an allergy to nuts.
Someone who is allergic to peanuts, let’s say.
They’re craving peanuts. To the point their whole body and mind is SCREAMING for it. They know they might get sick... but it’s just one, right? They decide to have a peanut. Not realizing the company they bought their jar of peanuts from made a “super peanut” in order to hook in new customers and increase sales.
This one peanut is 25-50 times more potent than a regular peanut. Their decision to eat one peanut, costs them their life.
This is the life of an addict that overdoses and dies.
Is it the exact same thing? No.
But my cousin did not want to die. He DESPERATELY wanted to live.
It’s been 5 since he died. It’s been 3 years that we have been waiting for a trial to convict the man that sold him this “super” dope.
Every time the trial comes up it gets pushed out once again. The man who sold him this dope was part of the largest heroin bust in Rochester, and is already sitting in prison serving time for a separate drug charge. Because of this, trials for other cases keep getting pushed to the top before ours. I understand the right to a speedy trial for others… but when do the rights of my family matter? The right to finally let this whole thing rest and focus on moving forward. He has been gone for FIVE YEARS, and we are still waiting on his justice. What better time then now, with fentanyl related deaths having risen to account for 2/3 of all overdose deaths. Now is the time to act. Not to continue to push it off.
Please sign this petition in support of the court holding to the proposed trial date in July 2022, and not pushing it out again. Please show support for my family so we can get this over with and put it behind us.
