JUSTICE FOR MAHESH SHELKE

Protect Every Officer Who Serves on Duty

To: Government of Maharashtra, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, IndianOil Corporation Limited, and the relevant law-enforcement authorities.

We, the undersigned citizens, COEP alumni, colleagues, and concerned members of society, call for justice for Shri Mahesh Shelke, an IndianOil officer who lost his life while performing his official duties in Hingoli, Maharashtra, on 6 October 2026.

Mahesh went to work to discharge his responsibilities. His tragic death is a profound loss for his family, colleagues, and community. No employee should have to risk their life simply for carrying out an official assignment.

We believe this tragedy must lead not only to accountability under the law, but also to meaningful changes that protect others from similar incidents.

Our demands

1. Justice without undue delay
We call for a thorough, impartial investigation and a fair, time-bound trial, with the accused dealt with in accordance with the law.

2. Effective legal support
We urge the relevant authorities to consider appointing a Special Public Prosecutor, where appropriate, to ensure effective prosecution.

3. Safety for officers in the field
We call on IndianOil and the relevant authorities to introduce mandatory risk assessments for sensitive field operations, appropriate police protection where risks warrant it, clear safety protocols, and emergency-response procedures.

4. Dignity and support for the bereaved family
We urge IndianOil and the appropriate authorities to ensure that Mahesh’s family receives all applicable financial, legal, and welfare support.

5. Protection across public-sector organisations
We call for a review of safeguards for employees of oil marketing companies and other public-sector organisations who undertake sensitive enforcement, inspection, recovery, and takeover operations.
