Justice for Leo and other cats save them thier animals too
The Issue
On Monday the 11th August Leo was out doing what a cat should be doing playing Leo was a Bengal cat and my best friend. At just two years old, he was full of life, curious, and loved to explore the world around him, always coming back home to sleep and share his gentle meows with us. However, Leo's vibrant life was cut short when he was tragically hit by a van. Which we had the reg plate number make and the rang the hired company and they looking at the gps and told me that reg plate was the van down where Leo lost his life and still the police said it’s just a cat Heartbreakingly, the driver left him suffering in the road, deeming him just a cat. To us, Leo was family, and his needless suffering left a deep void in our lives.
This painful incident brought to light a glaring issue in our society – the lack of legal protection for cats on the road. Unlike dogs or livestock, when cats are hit by cars, there is no legal obligation to report the incident. This means that countless cats, like Leo, are left to suffer or die alone without assistance or intervention.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 25% of U.S. households own cats, making them one of the most popular pets. Sadly, many cat owners share a common fear of their beloved companions being injured in road accidents and having their losses dismissed as insignificant.
We urgently need laws that mandate the reporting of cats hit by vehicles, just like the reporting required for dogs and livestock. By enforcing such legislation, we ensure that cats receive the same protection and respect, making it a legal obligation for drivers to report and possibly save lives.
Help us close this gap in animal protection laws. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to make it compulsory to report any cat injuries from vehicle incidents. Together, we can push for justice not just for Leo, but for all the cats who deserve care and respect. Let us give a voice to those who cannot demand justice for themselves.
