Justice for Kiara Agnew: Demand Answers, Demand Safety for Canadians Abroad

On March 3, 2023, Kiara Agnew, a vibrant 23-year-old Canadian, was brutally murdered just days before her birthday while on a dream vacation at the Grand Sunset Princess Resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Her body was discovered in a janitorial closet near her boyfriend, who was promptly detained on charges of femicide. The hotel reacted by immediately securing the area with 24/7 surveillance, yet guests were kept in the dark.

From the start, the Mexican prosecution assured Kiara’s family that this was an isolated event. Approximately six to eight surveillance videos, promised to be reviewed and transcribed by September 2023, were never shared with the family. When questioned, officials stated that Kiara and her boyfriend were only seen on footage "rounding corners," but no footage was provided.

Despite the family's commitment to following the case closely, they faced numerous barriers. Kiara’s mother, sister, and aunt were prohibited from witnessing the trial. A translator in the courtroom failed to accurately convey Kiara’s mother's testimony, distorting crucial details.

Then, on September 11, 2024, the judge delivered a shocking verdict: "not guilty." The reason?

The judge cited the severity of Kiara's injuries and the absence of similar injuries on the accused, suggesting the involvement of multiple aggressors—an idea never mentioned to the family before.

How safe are Mexican resorts for Canadian women?

How was a murder investigation of a young Canadian mishandled so gravely?

Kiara’s family is left with far too many unanswered questions.

We are calling on the Canadian government to investigate this case thoroughly. This is not just about justice for Kiara; it’s about the safety of all Canadians and the rampant violence against women that must be addressed.

Sign this petition to demand accountability, transparency, and justice for Kiara Agnew. Silence is violence. Together, we can stand against violence toward women and demand the answers that Kiara and her family deserve.

Stand with us in unison to shed light on the epidemic that is Violence Against Women.
