Petition to End Long-Term Captivity and Transfers of Marine Animals

We urge governments, marine parks, and aquariums worldwide to take immediate action to protect marine animals from the psychological and physical harm caused by prolonged captivity and repeated transfers.

 

The heartbreaking story of Keto, an orca who spent his entire life confined to tanks and was shuffled between marine parks before dying tragically at just 29 years old, has inspired a global call for change. Keto’s life represents the daily suffering endured by countless marine animals in captivity, animals who are deprived of their natural habitats and the freedom of the open ocean.

 

We propose the following measures:

 1. Strict Limits on Captivity Duration: No marine animal should be kept in captivity for their entire life unless they are unable to survive in the wild due to injury or other unique circumstances. If any animal is in captivity, this event should be temporary and focused on rehabilitation and eventual release.

 2. Ban on Transfers After Placement: Once an animal finds a temporary home at an aquarium or marine park, it should not be subjected to the stress and trauma of relocation. Repeated transfers disrupt social bonds and cause immense mental and physical strain.

 3. Global Oversight and Standards: All facilities housing marine animals must be held to strict global standards of care, prioritizing the well-being of the animals above profits and entertainment.

 

Marine animals are intelligent, social beings who belong in the ocean—not in tanks. By signing this petition, you are demanding an end to the practices that keep these animals in suffering and calling for a future where their rights and well-being are protected.
