JUSTICE FOR KAYDYN & ALIVIA

JUSTICE FOR KAYDYN & ALIVIA
Why this petition matters

Tuesday, August 9th 2022, was the worst morning you could ever imagine. We got a call that my niece, Kaydyn, was hit by a car while walking to school. If you have ever gotten a call like that, you know what emotions we felt. We live about a mile from the middle school and she walks frequently, per her request. She knows crosswalk safety and follows it to a t. This morning, though, while in the middle of a crosswalk (where she had the right of way and the signal to cross!!!!) a car turned left without a green arrow or paying attention and struck her, forcing her body into her friend, Alivia’s body and leaving both of them on the ground. Kaydyn was either knocked unconscious or blacked out, we aren’t sure. She suffered a pretty serious concussion and doesn’t remember it all too well, along with severe bruising all over her body, a broken front tooth (that is also made it almost impossible to eat because she is in pain), whiplash, and is currently using crutches to help her walk. Those are her physical injuries, her mental injuries are far more severe. She even had to throw away the perfume she was wearing that day due to the smell giving her flashbacks and making her panic. I say all of this because we recently found out the woman that was driving so recklessly and carelessly, Ellen Courtney Drake, is the Supervisor of Communications at the Murfreesboro Police Department. The woman did not exit her vehicle once to check on the children in the middle of a busy road that she hit with her car. She didn’t apologize. She didn’t have remorse. She had nothing to say. She stayed on her phone the entire time. I don’t know with who, but I can presume it was whoever got her out of this mess. After the “investigation” was completed, no charges were filed and not even a citation, or ticket, was issued. I have a friend who was charged with speeding in this same school zone and received a $300 ticket.. where is the justice? We are teaching everyone that if you know the right people or work for the right place, you have no consequences. You can literally BREAK THE LAW and hit two children who are in a crosswalk and following all of the rules IN A SCHOOL ZONE, with nothing done to you. I will never stop fighting for not only my niece and her friend, but all the children in Murfreesboro. We cannot let the cover ups continue!!!
