[ENGLISH] On December 16, 2020, Onelio Henriquez Aleman brutally attacked his older sister, Juana Henriquez, because he was jealous their mom left Juana, and not him, the family home in the village of Pueblo Viejo, municipality of Dulce Nombre de Culmi, in the department of Olancho in Honduras.

Onelio hit Juana’s head so brutally on a cement wall and punched her body with his fists repeatedly, leaving Juana in a coma and fractured her spine. As he intentionally punched and beat her over and over, he screamed at her “you’re not going to take my house, this is my land!!!” Onelio left Juana’s injured body unattended all night, hoping she would die and he would get away with her murder. 

After more than 24 hours after being attacked by Onelio, Juana underwent various surgeries, including two brain surgeries where a piece of her brain had to be removed. Juana was transported to various hospitals in Honduras and the United States in efforts to save her life but Juana never regained consciousness and all medical treatments were unsuccessful.

Juana succumbed to her injuries and died on January 23, 2021 with her kids, grandkids and great-grandchildren near her side. Juana was loved dearly by her kids and grandkids who begged her not to leave the comforts, convenience, and safety of the United States where she was an American citizen but she was adamant about going back to her home town in Honduras to take care of her aging mother. Juana was a vibrant woman, who loved dancing and spending time with her family, who taught her kids to always stand up for what’s right and loved helping others.

Onelio, her brother and killer, refuses to plea guilty and with the support of one of his brother is trying to justify his brutal murder by claiming he attacked Juana while suffering an epilepsy attack and so he shouldn’t be held responsible for her murder. Onelio was sober, and in his right senses when he intentionally decided to kill his sister. In fact he had tried to suffocate Juana one night months before. Onelio also previously told his other siblings that he was going to kill Juana. The day after attacking Juana, Onelio killed and cooked a chicken and was celebrating with loud music in the same home where only hours before he had left her all bloody, with vomit and urine, to die alone. At court hearings, Onelio has maliciously laughed at Juana’s kids and grandkids calling them crazy and saying he will be set free.

Onelio’s trial is set for September 27, 2022 in Honduras. Even though there is witness testimony and scientific evidence showing this was a clear violent, premeditated, and intentional murder, the laws in Honduras favor criminals and murderers, rather than protecting victims.

Honduras’ maximum sentence for homicide is 20 years, however, murderers typically only receive 15 year sentences and are legally only required to serve 1/3 of the time in prison. If the murderer has sufficient money and connections, it is very common for murderers in Honduras to be able to get out of prison after only 2 years. The laws in Honduras require that a defendant be released after 2 years of being detained if he hasn’t been sentenced, even if the delay in sentencing is caused by the defendant —- which is what one of Onelio’s brother is trying to help him do by lying and claiming Onelio suffers from a mental health condition (which he doesn't).

Although Honduras recognizes femicide as a crime with a maximum sentence of 30 years, the court system refuses to recognize Juana’s murder as a femicide because she happened to be the sister of her murderer. Despite Juana being the third woman Onelio has attacked. Previously, Onelio beat his other sister, leaving her face deformed and requiring various delicate facial surgeries, and beat the mother of his children resulting in him being arrested.

Juana’s children and grandchildren have been relentlessly fighting for justice for almost 2 years now and we beg you to please share awareness of this case.

Please help us bring awareness so that: 1) there is justice for Juana, 2) Onelio is convicted guilty on September 27th, 3) Onelio is sentenced to the maximum amount of years, 4) Juana's murder is classified as a femicide, and 5) there is meaningful change in the legal system to protect victims, especially for all the fallen women of Honduras and around the world. [ESPAÑOL] El 16 de diciembre de 2020, Onelio Henríquez Alemán agredió brutalmente a su hermana mayor, Juana Henríquez, porque estaba celoso que su mamá le dio a Juana, y no a él, la casa familiar en la aldea Pueblo Viejo, municipio de Dulce Nombre de Culmi, en el departamento de Olancho en Honduras. 

Onelio golpeó brutalmente la cabeza de Juana contra una pared de cemento y golpeó su cuerpo con los puños repetidamente, dejando a Juana en coma y fracturando su columna. Mientras la golpeaba y golpeaba intencionalmente una y otra vez, le gritaba: "¡¡¡No me vas a quitar mi casa, esta es mi tierra!!!" Onelio dejó el cuerpo herido de Juana desatendido toda la noche, con la esperanza de que ella muriera y él se saliera con la suya. 

Después de más de 24 horas de haber sido atacada por Onelio, Juana fue sometida a varias cirugías, incluidas dos cirugías cerebrales en las que se tuvo que extirpar una parte de su cerebro. Juana fue transportada a varios hospitales en Honduras y los Estados Unidos en un esfuerzo por salvar su vida, pero Juana nunca recuperó el conocimiento y todos los tratamientos médicos no tuvieron éxito. 

Juana sucumbió a sus heridas y murió el 23 de enero de 2021 con sus hijos, nietos y bisnietos a su lado. Juana era muy querida por sus hijos y nietos, quienes le rogaban que no dejara las comodidades, la conveniencia y la seguridad de los Estados Unidos, donde era ciudadana estadounidense, pero ella estaba decidida a regresar a su ciudad natal en Honduras para cuidar de su madre anciana. Juana era una mujer vibrante, que le encantaba bailar y pasar tiempo con su familia, le enseñó a sus hijos a defender siempre lo que es correcto y le encantaba ayudar a los demás. 

Onelio, su hermano y asesino, se niega a declararse culpable y con el apoyo de uno de su hermanos intenta justificar su brutal asesinato alegando que atacó a Juana mientras sufría un ataque de epilepsia y que no debería ser responsable de su asesinato. Onelio estaba sobrio y en sus cabales cuando intencionalmente decidió matar a su hermana. De hecho había intentado asfixiar a Juana una noche meses antes. Onelio también les dijo previamente a sus otros hermanos que iba a matar a Juana. Al día siguiente de atacar a Juana, Onelio mató y cocinó una gallina y estaba celebrando con música a todo volumen en la misma casa donde solo unas horas antes la había dejado toda ensangrentada, con vómito y orina, para que muriera sola. En las audiencias judiciales, Onelio se ha reído maliciosamente de los hijos y nietos de Juana llamándolos locos y diciendo que lo dejarán en libertad. 

El juicio de Onelio está fijado para el 27 de septiembre de 2022 en Honduras. Aunque hay testimonios de testigos y evidencia científica que demuestra que se trata de un claro asesinato violento, premeditado e intencional, las leyes en Honduras favorecen a los delincuentes y asesinos, en lugar de proteger a las víctimas. 

La sentencia máxima de Honduras por homicidio es de 20 años, sin embargo, los asesinos generalmente solo reciben sentencias de 15 años y legalmente solo deben cumplir 1/3 del tiempo en prisión. Si el asesino tiene suficiente dinero y conexiones, es muy común que los asesinos en Honduras puedan salir del presidio después de solo 2 años. Las leyes en Honduras requieren que un acusado sea liberado después de 2 años de estar detenido si no ha sido sentenciado, incluso si la demora en la sentencia es causada por el acusado, que es lo que uno de los hermanos de Onelio está tratando de ayudarlo a hacer --mintiendo que Onelio sufre de una condición de salud mental (que no es verdad). 

Aunque Honduras reconoce el femincidio como un delito con una pena máxima de 30 años, el sistema judicial se niega a reconocer el asesinato de Juana como un femincidio porque resultó ser la hermana de su asesino. A pesar de que Juana es la tercera mujer a la que Onelio ataca. Previamente, Onelio golpeó a su otra hermana, dejándole el rostro deformado y requiriendo varias cirugías faciales delicadas, y golpeó a la madre de sus hijos resultando en su arresto. 

Los hijos y nietos de Juana han estado luchando sin descanso por la justicia durante casi 2 años y les rogamos que compartan el conocimiento de este caso. 

Por favor ayúdenos a compartir conocimientos de este caso para que: 1) haya justicia para Juana, 2) Onelio sea declarado culpable el 27 de septiembre, 3) Onelio sea condenado a la máxima cantidad de años, 4) el asesinato de Juana sea clasificado como feminicidio, e 5 ) haya un cambio significativo en el sistema legal para proteger a las víctimas, especialmente para todas las mujeres caídas de Honduras y alrededor del mundo.
