The Issue

On September 28th, 2021, my grandpa Jeff committed suicide. He had never shown any previous signs of suicidal thoughts or ideation. However, he was prescribed more than the recommended dosage of a medication with side effects of suicidal thoughts. I demand that we seek Justice for Jeff.

To the Alabama State Legislature and Governor of Alabama,

We, the undersigned, call for the passage of a law in the State of Alabama that prioritizes the safety and well-being of patients by ensuring that medical professionals fully inform patients about the potential side effects of prescribed medications, including the risk of suicidal thoughts. Additionally, we urge the inclusion of clear, visible warning labels on pill bottles to highlight this critical information.

This petition is named “Justice for Jeff” in honor of the grandfather of Dazz, Jeffrey Charles Hunt, who tragically lost his life to suicide after being overprescribed medication with known suicidal side effects. His death was preventable, and no family should have to endure the loss of a loved one due to inadequate communication about the risks associated with prescribed medications.

We propose the following measures:

1. Mandatory Patient Notification:
Require all healthcare professionals—including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other medical personnel—to inform patients verbally and in writing about the potential side effects of any prescribed medication, particularly those involving suicidal thoughts or behaviors. This especially includes prescribing even larger quantities of medications with known suicidal side effects!

2. Warning Labels on Pill Bottles:
Require pharmaceutical companies and pharmacies to include clear, visible warning labels about suicidal side effects on pill bottles, alongside other listed side effects. These warnings must be easily noticeable to ensure patients and caregivers are fully aware of the risks.

Why This Matters:
Every patient has the right to make informed decisions about their health. The lack of clear communication about the risks of medications can have devastating consequences, as it did in my grandfather’s case. Transparency and education are vital in preventing tragedies and empowering patients to seek help if they experience adverse effects.

How This Will Help:
- Prevent avoidable tragedies by ensuring patients and caregivers are aware of life-threatening risks.
- Build trust between healthcare providers and patients by prioritizing full disclosure.
- Save lives through proactive communication and clear warnings.

Please. For Jeff.
