The Issue

Jake was more than just a dog. He was a beloved eight-year-old family member who brought love and companionship to everyone who knew him. Tragically, his life was cut short when he was struck in a hit-and-run by a reckless driver at the intersection of Royce Street and Avenue T in Brooklyn. His devastated owner watched helplessly as the driver sped away, unable to capture the license plate. The entire Bergen Beach community has been shaken by this loss, which highlights the urgent need for safer streets.

The intersection of Royce Street and Avenue T has become a hotspot for drifting and reckless driving, creating danger for pedestrians, residents, and their pets. To honor Jake’s memory and protect others, we are calling for the creation of a memorial safety island at this intersection. This island would serve both as a tribute to a cherished companion and as a traffic-calming measure proven to reduce collisions by up to 40 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A memorial island would enhance visibility, slow down drivers, and remind everyone to share the road responsibly. Jake’s passing should not be in vain. It can mark the beginning of change.

We urge local authorities and urban planners to act now.
Let us turn grief into action and make Bergen Beach safer for everyone.
