Justice for all: legal aid free at the point of delivery

Growing up in the United Kingdom, I believed that justice was a right available to everyone. My own experience has shown me how painfully that promise can fall short.

I have suffered injustice because I could not afford proper legal representation. The consequences have changed the course of my life. I am calling for change because no one should have to face that same barrier.

A right you cannot afford to defend is a right you may be unable to exercise. Whether you are facing an accusation, losing your home, protecting your family or challenging wrongdoing, you need access to effective legal advice and representation.

We call on the UK Government and Parliament to secure state-funded legal aid, free at the point of delivery, across the United Kingdom. We propose funding this through an additional one penny in the pound on National Insurance—a one-percentage-point increase in the contribution rate.

The principle is straightforward: we contribute together so that legal help is available when any of us needs it.

We ask the Government to:

Establish access to legal advice and representation without financial barriers.
Independently assess and publish the costs of this provision and the revenue the proposed National Insurance increase would raise.
Dedicate the additional revenue to legal aid, with transparent reporting on how it is spent.
Work with the devolved administrations to deliver effective access to justice throughout the UK.
Justice should never depend on your bank balance. The promise of equality before the law must include the practical means to stand up for your rights.

Any of us could need legal help. Any of us could face circumstances we never expected. We should be able to turn to a system that helps us, without the fear that seeking justice will leave us destitute.
