On the late night of August 13, 2024, 16 year-old Easter Leafa was shot three times by two officers of the Anchorage Police Department in East Anchorage, Alaska. Easter was pronounced dead upon arrival to the hospital. No de-escalation tactics were used prior to the shooting, instead taking her holding a knife as a perceived appropriate response of multiple gunshots. Her family members were also all within the household and witnessed the scenario unfold. 

The Anchorage Police department has now shot 6 people in the past 3 months alone, proving inadequacy of protecting civilian citizens and heightening scenarios with lethal force. APD acts with inadequate and nonexistent de-escalation tactics, training, or commands. Additionally, after a significant delay, APD has implemented body cams on their officers but has yet to release unedited footage in any of their shootings. 

We petition to hold Anchorage Police Department accountable, to release the unedited body camera footage for the full story, and to petition to change Anchorage Police Department trainings to go from trigger-happy to de-escalated, mental health-informed tactics and trainings that prevent deaths from happening! Justice for Easter!
