The Issue

Andrew Fedyk and his wife had just welcomed a new baby, and they wanted their two Bernese Mountain dogs to get some basic leash and behavior training to help everyone adjust. After researching online, they chose Smart Dogs Training Academy in Studio City, run by trainer Jeff Todd, and paid $10,000 for a four-week "board and train" program for their dogs, including their 2-year-old, Dunkin.

Less than 48 hours after drop-off, Fedyk got a call: Dunkin was dead.

Fedyk says staff told him the dogs had been out at a park that morning, and when it got too hot, staff decided to drive them to a different kennel in Hollywood — without ever telling Fedyk about the move. Dunkin reportedly died somewhere along that drive. Fedyk says no one took Dunkin to a veterinarian until he asked them to, hours after his dog had already died. Fedyk also suspects the dogs may have been left outside during a Los Angeles heatwave, though that hasn't been confirmed.

"He was my best friend," Fedyk said. "He was hands down the most friendly dog on the planet. We miss him so much."

Since sharing his story, Fedyk says other families have reached out, reporting that their dogs also died while under Jeff Todd's care at Smart Dogs Training — accounts that haven't been independently confirmed. Fedyk is pursuing a necropsy to determine what happened to Dunkin and has asked the Los Angeles Police Department and LA Animal Services to investigate.

No family should hand over their pet and their trust — and get back nothing but unanswered questions. Sign this petition to demand that LA Animal Services and the LAPD fully investigate Smart Dogs Training Academy, before another dog is lost the same way.

Responded
LA Animal Services has received the complaint from the dog owner, and we are looking into the incident. This is an open and active investigation, so no additional information is available at this time. When placing your dog in the care of a boarding facility, LA Animal Services strongly recommends that you perform a thorough, in-person visit and walkthrough of the entire property beforehand. A reputable and trustworthy boarding facility will accommodate tours and welcome prospective clients to inspect their accommodations, safety protocols, and general environment. During your walkthrough, observe the cleanliness and security of the kennels, evaluate the play and exercise areas, and speak directly with the facility staff regarding their daily routines, supervision ratios, and emergency medical procedures. The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.]
