On Friday 16 July 2021, Food Standards Agency (FSA) telephoned Animal Justice Project to tell them The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) would NOT be prosecuting Gressingham Foods despite us filming clear and blatant law breaking during September 2020 at Gressingham's Redgrave slaughterhouse. 

Despite being provided with clear evidence by Animal Justice Project and FSA, the CPS have concluded that prosecuting Gressingham Foods would "not be in the public interest".

This is unacceptable and we demand Justice for Ducks killed by Gressingham Foods.

Animal Justice Project put up secret cameras inside the UK's largest duck slaughterhouse to show the reality for 14 million ducks killed each year.

Our cameras captured serious law breaking - not just the abuse of ducks, but also workers leaving live birds hanging upside down on shackles for a staggering 14 minutes. The law clearly states that live birds must not hang any longer than two minutes. 

The footage reveals breaches in guidelines set out by the UK government to ensure adherence with EU regulation 1099/2099 on the protection of animals at the time of killing and the UK's Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing (WATOK) regulations inside this slaughterhouse, and follow on from the issuing of major non-compliance notices relating to animal welfare at the same slaughterhouse in 2018 by FSA.

The FSA told us this should have been a straight forward case and are now appealing. FSA have also stated that ‘immediate and robust enforcement action will be taken’ if issues relating to animal welfare are found. Animal Justice Project is now demanding action. 

The CPS prosecutes criminal cases investigated by the police and other investigative organisations in England and Wales, yet their unwillingness to prosecute Gressingham Foods reveals a complete FAILURE by this government to protect farmed animals. The CPS states claims to have a 'duty to bring offenders to justice' yet there is NO justice for ducks killed by Gressingham Foods.

Gressingham Duck kills 8 million ducks a year which is the equivalent of over 150,000 a week, and accounts for over half the farmed ducks, kills around 150,000 ducks a week and supplies Red Tractor Assured duck to Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Tesco, Co-Op, ASDA and Morrisons.
