On August 4, 2025, Dr. Ban Ziyad Tariq—a psychiatrist in Basra, Iraq—was found dead under suspicious circumstances. Although authorities labeled her death a suicide, credible evidence suggests otherwise:

Signs of strangulation, extensive bruising, and deep wrist lacerations inconsistent with self-harm

Disabled surveillance cameras, a message written in blood on a bathroom wall, and delay/cleanup of the scene before investigators arrived

Lack of a proper autopsy or forensic examination— unlike normal protocol 

Dr. Ban was a dedicated medical professional and mental health advocate. Her untimely death has triggered protests in Basra and Baghdad as people demand transparency and truth. Activists point to her case as emblematic of broader threats faced by professional women in Iraq and the persistent failures of the judicial system .

 

What We Demand:

We, the undersigned, call upon the Iraqi government and the international community to:

1. Form an independent, transparent investigative commission free from political interference

2. Conduct a forensic re-examination of Dr. Ban’s body and relevant evidence

3. Ensure judicial accountability if foul play is confirmed

4. Strengthen protections for women professionals and enact robust laws against violence and impunity

العدالة للدكتورة بان زياد طارق — نطالب بتحقيق مستقل

في 4 آب/أغسطس 2025، عُثر على الدكتورة بان زياد طارق، الطبيبة النفسية البارزة من البصرة، ميتة في ظروف مشبوهة. ورغم وجود أدلة قوية تشير إلى احتمال وقوع جريمة قتل، تم تسجيل القضية بسرعة على أنها "انتحار". هذا القرار لم يكن فقط صدمة لزملائها ووللناس اللذين يعرفونها جيدا، بل كان أيضاً إهانة لذكرى إنسانة كرّست حياتها لخدمة المرضى والمجتمع.

تشير تقارير وشهادات إلى وجود إصابات وكسور وآثار عنف لا تتفق مع رواية "الانتحار". إن تجاهل هذه الأدلة يثير القلق من وجود محاولات للتستر وإغلاق الملف دون محاسبة.

قضية الدكتورة بان ليست مجرد قضية فردية، بل هي جزء من واقع مقلق تعيشه النساء في العراق، حيث تتعرض الكثير منهن للتهديد والعنف والتمييز دون حماية قانونية كافية. إن الإفلات من العقاب يرسخ ثقافة الصمت والخوف، ويعرّض حياة المزيد من النساء للخطر.

مطالبنا:

فتح تحقيق مستقل وشفاف في وفاة الدكتورة بان زياد طارق، بإشراف خبراء جنائيين محايدين.
ضمان محاسبة المسؤولين عن أي تقصير أو تستر.
توفير حماية حقيقية للنساء العراقيات، خصوصاً الطبيبات والناشطات والعاملات في المجال العام.
تدخل المجتمع الدولي، بما في ذلك الأمم المتحدة والمنظمات الحقوقية العالمية، للضغط من أجل العدالة ومنع تكرار مثل هذه المآسي.
