JUSTICE FOR DALER SINGH

The Issue

Daler Singh is a political prisoner being held in a U.S. immigration jail at the direction of Narendra Modi’s Hindu Nationalist Indian government. He is a well-known Punjabi Sikh activist who has denounced the oppression that Sikhs in India and throughout the world suffer because of their ethnicity, religion, and political opinion. In 2019, he was forced to flee India after being physically attacked by BJP members on two occasions and falsely accused of crimes, for which he has since been acquitted. Years after leaving India, the government and police concocted a new scheme to get him deported from the United States, and this plot centers on filing even more false charges against him. Despite being completely bogus charges that are not supported by any scintilla of evidence, the U.S. government took Daler into custody, without cause and in violation of his right to due process, and has held him without bond for more than three months. Every day that Daler remains in custody is a day separated from his family, friends, and community that he will never get back. After the torture that Daler experienced in India, throwing him in a cage and forcing him to litigate his asylum application hundreds of miles away from his attorney and network of support is inhumane. We are therefore calling for his immediate release from incarceration and for the United States to uphold its obligations to justice, human rights, and refugee protections.
