The Issue

Introduction: We, the undersigned members, youth paddlers, parents, and concerned community members, hereby submit this petition to express our deep disappointment and dissatisfaction with the decision made by the Koa Kai Canoe Club to expel Coach Derek. We believe that his expulsion was unjust and urge the club’s leadership to reconsider their decision in the best interest of the youth paddlers and the club’s overall well-being.

Background: On the day of the Fathers Day regatta in Nanakuli, a regrettable accident occurred involving the girls 18U steers woman, who was struck by Healani’s canoe during a turn. This incident resulted in multiple bruises and physical pain for the steerswoman. While the girls 18U team was unfortunately disqualified from the race, it is important to note that they never intended for such an accident to happen.

Coach Derek, upon witnessing the distressing incident, took it upon himself to advocate for the girls 18U team and seek justice on their behalf. However, the club officers, who were the only individuals authorized to protest the race, failed to take action for unknown reasons. Coach Derek, driven by his commitment to the well-being of the youth paddlers, expressed his concerns passionately but did not deserve expulsion for his actions.

The decision to expel Coach Derek: The head coach, Paul Amoy, made the final decision to expel Coach Derek from Koa Kai Canoe Club without displaying empathy towards the youth paddlers, the families Coach Derek had built strong bonds with, or the concerned parents. This decision has left us all truly heartbroken, as Coach Derek’s contributions to the club and his positive impact on the youth paddlers cannot be overstated.

Our Request: We strongly request the Koa Kai Canoe Club’s leadership, particularly the club officers and Head Coach Paul Amoy, to reconsider their decision and reinstate Coach Derek as a valued member of the coaching staff. We believe that his dedication, expertise, and genuine care for the youth paddlers are indispensable assets to the club’s success and the overall development of its members.

Coach Derek’s reinstatement would not only address the heartfelt concerns of the youth paddlers and their families but also demonstrate the club’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and the well-being of its members. We believe in the power of reconciliation, compassion, and giving individuals the opportunity to learn and grow from their experiences.

Conclusion: By signing this petition, we express our unwavering support for Coach Derek and our strong desire to see him reinstated at Koa Kai Canoe Club. We believe that his expulsion was disproportionate to the events that unfolded, and his absence would create an irreplaceable void in the lives of the youth paddler and the club as a whole. Let us come together to ensure a positive and nurturing environment for our young athletes, where their voices are heard, their concerns are addressed, and their well-being is prioritized.
