Chase, a dedicated K-9 Officer, served our community with unwavering loyalty and commitment. Tragically, he was subjected to unimaginable abuse and mistreatment by his handler. Today, Chase is missing in action, and there are grave concerns that he may have been killed by the very person entrusted with his care.  We ask that a special fine and or jail time be added on top of the other increases when a police animal is injured or killed by their handler/caregiver.

This petition seeks justice for Chase and aims to prevent such heartbreaking incidents from happening again. We call upon lawmakers to pass legislation making it a felony offense to injure or mistreat law enforcement animals.  We also ask that fines be increased to up to $10,000.00.  We also ask that prison time be increased up to at least 5 years.

Law enforcement animals play an invaluable role in maintaining public safety. They are highly trained professionals who put their lives on the line every day alongside their human counterparts. These loyal companions deserve our utmost respect and protection under the law.

These cases range from physical abuse to neglectful treatment that compromises their well-being. By making it a felony offense punishable by significant penalties, we can send a strong message that society will not tolerate any form of cruelty towards these brave creatures who selflessly serve us all.

Research conducted by Animal Legal Defense Fund (source cited below) indicates that jurisdictions with stricter laws protecting law enforcement animals have seen a decrease in instances of animal abuse within this specific context. This suggests that enacting stronger legal protections can act as an effective deterrent against potential abusers.
