On the 8th of March 2023, at 4:30pm, two young boys ages 12 and 14 stole a senior cat from its home in Sydney. CCTV footage shows the boys grabbing the friendly cat and running up the street with him before proceeding to torture him. They brutally kicked and beat him to a sad and cruel death. The cat's name was Brandy.

Brandy had a family that loved her very much, she was known by the neighbourhood as the 'weird cat' that goes for walks in the park across the road. That same park now brings with it the harrowing memory for Brandys family who are absolutely devastated after CCTV footage revealed the last harrowing moments of Brandy's life before she was murdered.

What happened to Brandy is one of many horrific acts of animal cruelty that is occurring on a daily basis in Australia. There is a 17% increase of animal cruelty in the past 2 years and this needs to stop. These heartless monsters rarely ever face jail time and if they do they are given lenient sentences. These vile acts will continue due to our systems leniency when serving punishments to individuals who have committed crimes of animal cruelty. Stronger retribution needs to be in place for animal cruelty and harsher punitive consequences need to be enforced. Our goal is to have the same consequences and sentencing served upon those for animal cruelty as they are if an individual harms another human. A life is a life. Animal or human. Inflicting pain and suffering onto an animal should result in jail time.

Both boys are due to face the children court on Tuesday 4th of April 2023. They are being charged for beating and causing death to an animal and disposing of a killed or stolen animal. We need to set the precedent and put pressure on our government and our legal system in honour of Brandy. We need to get justice for this beautiful girl who was brutally robbed of her life. It is time we collectively stand up against animal cruelty so we can see changes in our justice system. It is time for tougher laws towards these criminals.
