The Issue
Ángel Rivas Téllez tenía apenas 17 años.
Un adolescente dentro del espectro autista, hispano, y parte de la comunidad LGBT+, un chico al que el sistema escolar le falló una y otra vez, que soportó acoso constante, así como discriminación. Cuando más necesitó protección, no la tuvo. Un menor de edad, vulnerable, frente a un proceso que nunca pareció diseñado para comprenderlo.
El resultado fue devastador: 38 años de prisión, más 4 años de libertad supervisada. Y el día que finalmente salga, cargará además con una deuda de 180,000 dólares en concepto de restitución.
Como si la vida no hubiera sido ya suficientemente dura con él, esta sentencia terminó por arrebatarle hasta la última esperanza que le quedaba.
Esta campaña nace del amor de su familia y de una comunidad que se niega a darle la espalda, Ángel merecía protección, merecía una defensa real, merecía que alguien lo escuchara. ¡Todavía estamos a tiempo!

A teenager on the autism spectrum, Hispanic, and part of the LGBT+ community, a kid the school system failed time and time again, who endured constant bullying and discrimination. When he needed protection the most, he didn't have it. A vulnerable minor, facing a process that never seemed designed to understand him.
The outcome was devastating: 38 years in prison, plus 4 years of supervised release. And the day he finally walks free, he'll carry an additional debt of $180,000 in restitution.
As if life hadn't already been hard enough on him, this sentence stripped away the last bit of hope he had left.
This campaign was born from the love of his family and a community that refuses to turn its back on him. Ángel deserved protection. He deserved a real defense. He deserved to have someone listen. There's still time!
