Justice For ALL Animals
Justice For ALL Animals
(I changed the Carbon petition into this instead) Being locked up in a cage too small to even stand up in. Urinating in the same dirty space for ages. Getting discriminated just because of your breed. Killed by your own owners, intentionally or not. This needs to stop!
Pets and animals need to be treated better. Every single year, about 10 million animals die from abuse in the United States. Pit bulls are the most abused and neglected dogs; it is sad that so many people hate pit bulls because of their breed, even if some of them are the friendly type. It is estimated that 1 million animals are abused each year because of domestic violence, 32% of which are caused by children.
Animal shelters all over America have been reported abusing their animals. They have been caught keeping the animals in dirty, small places and hurting/torturing them. TONS of pets are bought from pet stores each day. We need to start treating animals better.
Why are almost all pet stores bad? Let’s find out. First of all, they sell pets. Where do they get these pets from? Pet mills! Pet mills are places that breed pets for pet stores. They keep their pets in unacceptable conditions, putting way too many creatures in a tiny, dirty, area with no enrichment. Some of these animals get so hungry that they EAT each other! Some of them die on the way to the pet store, due to the neglect they received. By buying pets from pet stores, you will save a pet, but you will continue the cycle.
Pet stores such as Petco and PetSmart give out wrong information, and keep their pets in cruel condition. They sell cages under the minimum requirement for that pet, and share improper diet plans. For example, on Petco’s hamster care sheets, it says hamsters should be given 1-2 inches of bedding to burrow. Hamsters cannot burrow in that little bedding. In the wild, hamsters actually make tunnels, they don’t just cover themselves 2 inches deep into the ground. I repeat, they DO make actual tunnels, a bit like rabbits, and should be given at least 6 inches of bedding in one part of their cage. Pet stores will also provide rabbits with cages that are fit for hamsters, and one of PetSmart’s rabbit care sheets says that a rabbit’s diet should be 75% hay, 20% pellets, and 5% treats. There are no veggies listed, and rabbits should have 1-2 cups of veggies a day, depending on their breed and weight. They should only have 1/4 of veggies per 6 pound rabbit, which is a lot less than a good veggie amount. There are are so many other things to point out, like the unsafe pine and cedar bedding that could cause respiratory infections and bumblefoot which is an infection, or salt licks that could be harmful. Pet stores need to change.
Too many animals are abused each year in the United States, and it is horrible. People physically abuse their pets by choking them, throwing them, kicking them, etc. The punishment for abusing animals should be more severe. Sometimes, animal abuse videos aren’t taken down and the person who committed it isn’t even inspected. This can’t happen anymore!
Pet stores shouldn’t sell pets and should only let people adopt pets, unless they breed the pets fairly (not too many times and in a good habitat with proper care). Or the pet mills should treat pets with care and not neglect them.
There should be a rule about pet cages from now on. The minimum requirement for all hamster cages should be at least 400 square inches/ 2580.64 square centimeters which is reasonable enough, although a minimum of 450 square inches would be much preferred. For Guinea pig cages, the minimum requirement for cages should be 7-7.5 square feet for one or 2 guinea pigs; the minimum sized cage for rabbits should be 8 square feet per 1-2 rabbits. It is up to Petco and PetSmart to make this happen, and to improve the lives of pets. Of course, more research should be done about all pet cages so no animal will have to suffer. There should be a rule that no wild animal is to be taken from it’s home and sold as a pet. More laws need to be made about animal abuse as well, with stricter punishments. Each animal deserves a good home, and a happy life.
