Not only does today mark Giving Tuesday, but last week saw the completion of the 1208 Foundation’s second year of operations. We have accomplished much over that second year, from front-page appearances in the New York Times, meetings with Congress and spearheading legislative efforts, and collaborating closely with the next generation of Afghan leaders.
All of that pales in comparison to our singular most important achievement: evacuating 25 families (120 people) out of Afghanistan. None of this would have been possible without donations from our supporters- it is for them who we are truly thankful for this holiday season. Of course, I would be remiss if I did not mention our six Afghan brothers on 1208 who have kept this show running: Suleman, Mahdi, Shewan, Mostafa, Wahid, and Farid.
I wish I could say the situation in Afghanistan is stabilizing, or that we have found the silver bullet to speed up our immigration processes, but that’s simply not the case. The strain of the last two years is starting to show, and over the past ten days I’ve referred more children to medical NGOs than the rest of 2023 combined. Meanwhile, the continued unrest and immigration backlash in Pakistan hampers our evacuation efforts and drives our costs up.
While we hope to eclipse what we achieved in 2023, it will not be easy: we still have close to 1,000 people left on our rosters, and we cannot aid them all without your help. I am asking for your support continuing our efforts. It doesn’t take much: $30 will buy a winter coat, and less than $150 will feed a family of five for a month.
