The Issue

A heartbreaking and deeply troubling incident recently unfolded in Newburgh, New York. A woman, a mother, was reportedly assaulted in her own home—an act of violence forced her young daughter to intervene to protect her. The home, which should have been a sanctuary, instead became a scene of fear and trauma.

The alleged perpetrator, Mark Adams, was arrested for this heinous act. However, within less than 24 hours, he was released back into the community. It is incomprehensible how quickly he regained his freedom, while the victims remain trapped in fear, knowing he roams free. This decision not only endangers the victim and her family but also sends a profoundly damaging message to all survivors of violence.

This petition calls for an immediate review of the release decision by the Newburgh legal authorities. We must ensure that justice is served, and that systemic changes are made so that victims are protected, and offenders are properly held accountable. Statistics indicate that women in the U.S., and New York in particular, report similar incidents of assault with alarming regularity, yet only a fraction of these cases see timely and appropriate legal follow-through.

We propose that:

1. The Newburgh law enforcement and judiciary conduct a thorough review of the release protocol that allowed such a swift freedom for the accused.
2. Further training and resources be allocated to law enforcement and judicial personnel on handling assault cases sensitively and effectively, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing victim protection.

Every moment that passes is another moment the victim lives in fear. It is critical that we address these issues, not only for this family but for the countless others who may face similar circumstances. By demanding accountability and transparency, we take a step towards ensuring that victims of violence receive the support they deserve while preventing future occurrences.

We urge you to stand with us. Sign this petition to hold the Newburgh authorities accountable and demand a safer, more just legal process for all victims of violence.
