The Issue

In September 2025, 84 animals were rescued from horrific conditions in Monroe, New York — the second major animal cruelty case at the same location in just over a year.

Linda Hickey, 62, has been arrested and charged after authorities seized dozens of neglected animals from her property on Old Dutch Hollow Road in Warwick, part of Orange County, NY.

The animals rescued included dogs, cats, rabbits, goats, pigs, parrots, hedgehogs, tortoises, prairie dogs, ferrets, a wallaby, and even a tarantula — all showing signs of neglect and poor care.

Law enforcement reported overwhelming odors of urine and feces. The building was condemned due to unsanitary and unsafe conditions.

This is not a one-time offense. In 2024, over 100 animals were seized from the same person and property. It is clear that prior consequences were not enough to prevent a repeat of the cruelty.

We call on:

  • The Orange County District Attorney’s Office (NY) to pursue maximum penalties under New York State law
  • The court to permanently ban Linda Hickey from owning or caring for animals
  • The New York State Legislature to consider tougher penalties for repeat animal cruelty offenders.

We also urge ongoing oversight by animal welfare agencies and stronger enforcement of animal protection laws across the state.

Thanks to the dedication of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Warwick Valley Humane Society, and Animal Nation, these animals were rescued and given a second chance.

But justice must follow rescue.
