The Issue

Nearly 600 animals perished in a devastating fire at a Dallas pet shop in January — a tragedy that could have been prevented.

Yet, no one has been held accountable yet!

Now, newly uncovered documents suggest that the City of Dallas ignored its own regulations and dismissed serious concerns about the facility.

Animal welfare advocates are still in shock over how many dogs, cats, birds, rodents, and reptiles were trapped inside the building at the time of the fire. The shop didn’t even appear to have proper city permits!

City records reveal that a total of 50 complaints were made about the shop to the City of Dallas since 2017, with 20 of them related to unsanitary conditions and animal welfare.

This catastrophic failure demands urgent action.

We call on the City of Dallas and Dallas Animal Services to:

  • Conduct a full and transparent investigation, naming those responsible and holding them accountable.
  • Review whether proper policies and protocols were followed by all stakeholders, including DAS and the City of Dallas
  • Develop and publicly present a plan to ensure such a tragedy never happens again.

Hundreds of innocent lives were lost due to negligence.
