Justice for 13 Abused Children and Animals in Toledo Home

Justice for 13 Abused Children and Animals in Toledo Home
The Issue
When Toledo police responded to a call about a paralyzed kitten being thrown down a flight of stairs, they never expected to find 13 children living in filth, insect infestations, and human and animal feces.
But that’s exactly what they discovered—children ages 1 through 13, visibly covered in bug bites, living in a home with no food, no working toilet or shower, and no sign of safety.
These children were only found because someone spoke up about an animal being abused.
This case exposes a horrifying but well-documented connection: where there is animal abuse, child abuse often follows. And in this case, both were happening behind closed doors, unchecked—until it was too late.
Three adults have been arrested and charged with felony child endangerment. The children have been placed in protective custody. But accountability cannot stop with a single arrest report. We must ensure that these children—and the animals harmed alongside them—receive the protection and care they were so clearly denied.
We call on the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office, Toledo City Council, and Lucas County Children Services to take immediate action:
- Permanently protect all 13 children from those who harmed or neglected them
- Pursue the maximum legal penalties for the individuals charged, if convicted
- Investigate and charge all applicable animal cruelty violations.
This tragedy was preventable—and it must never be repeated. When children and animals are abused in the same home, we cannot afford to treat those as separate cases.
