Dr. Umar Khalid was arrested on 13th September 2020. Since then, he has spent 6 years (2,194 days)  in detention without being given the opportunity to present a defense or contest the allegations in a court of law as his trial is yet to begin.

Prolonged pre-trial detention without clear progress toward a trial violates basic legal standards and fundamental human rights, specifically, the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty and the right to a fair trial within a reasonable timeframe.

When pre-trial detention stretches endlessly without judicial review, it ceases to be a legal process and becomes an unsanctioned form of punishment. Every day, Umar remains behind bars without a day in court, he is denied basic human dignity and isolated from his loved ones. We live in a democracy where everyone has the right to due process.

This silent deprivation of rights not only harms Umar Khalid but society as a whole and it compromises the integrity of the judicial system itself, sending a message that arbitrary detention can replace due process.
