Dear the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi; the Deputy High Commissioner, Kelly T. Clements and the High Commissioner’s Representative in Greece, Mireille Girard;
I am writing to inform UNHCR of my recent prolonged and unjustified detention in the basement of the Ambelokipi Police Station in Athens, Greece where I had been held for 42-days from June 24th, 2022, to August 05th, 2022, in conditions completely unfit for holding people for such a long period of time under the pretext of being undocumented and at risk of deportation for all this time.
This happened on day 285 of my 3rd Hunger Strike outside the UNHCR office when I decided to visit the U.S. Embassy again in order to request urgent humanitarian assistance and mediation in resolving my dire situation in Greece due to lack of a proper response to my case from UNHCR.
To watch the videos and read more details on this, please consult with the related update on my online Petition Campaign at the given below:
As you would read at the given link above, due to harsh conditions in the basement of the Police Station my health has been seriously deteriorated since after the first 10-days of my detention there and I have not yet been able to recover and currently in urgent need of medical attention. I have been feeling considerable pain in my lungs, often have fever and have also been having other concerning symptoms like wet coughs for the past 40-days.
I did a rapid Coronavirus test one day after my release from detention, which showed I have not been infected with this virus, but given the persistent symptoms I am suffering from, the nurse who performed the test at a pharmacy near Ambelokipi Police Station strongly suggested taking more tests, including a CPR test (if I am not mistaken) and other tests in order to determine the root cause of my illness.
Currently I am back at my protest site outside the UNHCR office. It was a relief to find my shelter still being here and not vanished by the Police or the entities. However, what worries me the most at this point are my survival, my safety and well-being.
Because after this short break from my 3rd-Hunger Strike and without any resolution which is yet to be offered to my case, and more importantly due to lack of a meaningful and a steady stream of financial support in terms of In-kind Donations, I have now practically been forced into undergoing another Hunger Strike.
This would be my 4th-Hunger Strike outside the UNHCR office in Athens, Greece, which has already begun on Saturday, August 06th, 2022.
In light of the above, I am pleading with the UNHCR again to take urgent action on the followings:
1)- First and foremost to find a Durable Solution to my case urgently and thereby put an end to my prolonged imprisonment and complete deprivation in Greece. In this case, a Durable Solution means my immediate Resettlement outside Europe, such as in Canada, United States or Australia.
2)- Secondly, to lend its support for the provision of the medical care, I urgently need for the reasons mentioned above. I am undocumented and in dire financial straits, in fact, without money, therefore, unable to avail myself of the medical services of a hospital or a private doctor without outside assistance.
3)- Immediate and constant Fundraising support in order to help with my survival in Greece till a resolution is found to my case. As I am now enduring my 4th-Hunger Strike outside the UNHCR office, I lack the most essential items such as Multivitamins just to name one which put my life in serious risk. It is obvious that I cannot survive just on drinking water with an empty stomach.
Lastly, I once again ask UNHCR for the provision of proper accommodation to me while it is processing my request for Resettlement in another country. Lack of water, electricity, bathroom and toilet have been among a variety of other daily issues I have been forced to deal with since the start of my protest and first Hunger Strike outside the UNHCR office in Athens, Greece on March 21st, 2017.
If UNHCR does not intend to resolve my case through its office in Greece, then it must help find a solution to it by responding to the fair propositions I have formally addressed to the organization on countless occasions both in writing (https://youtu.be/6uxSgcfoslg and now also via my online Petition Campaign.
Stop hurting me anymore, do your job, find me Asylum and put an end to this endless torment and my prolonged imprisonment and deprivation in Greece now.
Nothing like this should happen to anyone, anywhere and no one should be put through a situation like this.
I fear for my life, my safety and well-being.
This is a dire emergency. Please do not be indifferent and ignorant to what is happening here and take action now.
Thank you for your time and attention.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Yours Respectfully,
