Justice 4 Roman!!!!! Hold Mandan Police accountable for inhumane treatment of pets
The Issue
My life changed forever on September 25, 2025 in mandan,ND. My beloved pitbull, Roman, was shot and killed by the Mandan Police Department. After I was already detained for warrants, the officers involved decided not to wait for animal control. Instead, they entered the room where Roman and his kennel lay. Startled, Roman escaped and, in the chaos, bit an officer. The officer’s response was to shoot him. To this day, I never received Roman's remains, nor was I given any opportunity to provide my consent regarding their handling. Roman was not just my pet—he was my son, loyal and innocent.
This tragic incident sheds light on a broader issue concerning the unjust and inhumane treatment of animals by the Mandan Police. Not only have they demonstrated a lack of respect for animal welfare, but their use of excessive force in encountering animals during arrests is both irresponsible and cruel. Animals, especially those caught in the turmoil of their owner's arrests, deserve patient, professional care.
Statistics show that police departments across the United States have increasing encounters with pets, with many going unreported or overlooked (source: Animal Legal Defense Fund). Animal-related incidents should be managed with empathy and adherence to proper protocols. The use of lethal force should never be an option when other humane alternatives exist, such as awaiting animal control assistance.
We are calling for immediate reforms and accountability measures to ensure police officers receive adequate training in animal handling. It's crucial that comprehensive protocols and collaborations with local animal control are established to prevent such tragic outcomes in the future.
Let's ensure no more innocent animals, like Roman, suffer from unjust punishments due to inadequate response efforts. Join us in urging the Mandan Police Department to adopt humane practices and hold those responsible accountable. Your support and voice in this matter can drive change in policies, ensuring the safety and dignity of our community’s beloved pets.
Sign this petition and demand justice for Roman and countless other animals that deserve protection.
