JUNK MAIL Program From U.S. Postal Service MUST Have Opt-Out
The Issue
You Cannot Unsubscribe from Your Own Government's Advertising Mail!
Every day, the United States Postal Service delivers advertising to your mailbox that you never asked for, don't want, and legally cannot stop.
It's called Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM)- the mail marked "Postal Customer" or "ECRWSS." Unlike every other form of marketing in America, there is no opt-out. No registry. No refusal. No legal recourse.
You own your mailbox. But the government decides what goes in it.
The Cost We All Pay
This isn't just annoying- it's destroying our environment and draining public resources:
- 100 million trees cut down every year for junk mail
- 51.5 million metric tons of CO2 released annually
- $320 million in taxpayer money spent disposing of it
- 44% thrown away unopened: Nearly half never even gets read
- $2.9 billion lost annually to mail-based elder fraud schemes
The average American will spend 8 months of their life just sorting through junk mail.
Why Can't You Stop It?
Federal law gives the USPS a monopoly on your mailbox. Because EDDM is addressed to "Postal Customer" instead of you by name, you can't refuse it or return it. A "No Junk Mail" sign on your mailbox? Carriers are instructed to ignore it.
Meanwhile, countries like the Netherlands and Germany offer opt-in systems- you only receive advertising mail if you want it.
What We're Demanding
The USPS must create an official opt-out method for EDDM and ECRWSS mail.
If email marketers must honor unsubscribe requests (CAN-SPAM Act) and telemarketers must honor the Do Not Call list, why should the U.S. Postal Service be exempt?
We deserve the same consumer protection for our physical mailboxes that we have for our inboxes and phones.
Sign This Petition If You Believe:
- Americans should have the right to refuse unwanted advertising mail
- Environmental destruction for unopened ads is unacceptable
- The government shouldn't force advertising into your home
- Consumer choice should extend to your mailbox
- Junk Mail from the U.S. Post Office MUST Have an Opt-Out
Add your name. Demand the USPS give us the right to say no.
