Clay Allred is a former Green Beret Staff Sergeant who was expelled from the University of South Florida 17 credits short of a degree. On the night of August 21, 2014, Allred was denied the use of a restroom at a Mobil station off campus in Tampa by Qadratullan Hassan. In response, he apparently urinated on the floor, gave $100.00 to Hassan, then held an AR-15 at his side. He later discharged a Glock handgun into the air three times as he drove away. Charged with aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm and criminal mischief, he was expelled from USF. During his tour through the legal system he was diagnosed with PTSD as well as traumatic brain injury (resulting from a car crash). He received treatment for his PTSD, wrote a letter of apology to Hassan, and was sentenced to 2 years house arrest and three years’ probation. As a convicted felon, he cannot own or possess a firearm. Judge Greg Holder, the jurist in Allred's case has been a powerful and vocal supporter of the rehabilitation and reintegration of all veterans. Holder has urged the University of South Florida administration and Board of Trustees to allow readmission of this decorated veteran in an online status in order to complete his degree at USF. Over the last five (5) years, USF has received over $71M in grants and contracts to establish their Veteran Rehabilitation and Reintegration Center. The services provided are focused on helping veterans, such as Clay Allred, in dealing with various disabilities and conditions suffered during their military and wartime service. USF also advertises itself as the number two veteran friendly university in the country, yet, will not allow Allred to complete his degree. We are not asking for campus privileges, only that Allred be allowed to complete his degree by earning his credits through other means.
