Petition updateSTOMP: Save Trees Over More Pavement. Stop the Indiscriminate Removal of Trees Lining County Roads in Nassau (Including S. Oyster Bay Road)*Road Resurfacing Update*

OPERATION STOMPSyosset, NY, United States
Mar 31, 2015
Good afternoon STOMPers, we've been informed the following County Roads across Nassau will be resurfaced over the next several weeks via an interesting infusion of some federal funds. We have been assured there will be no tree removal, however, we need your collective eyes. Please be on the lookout for white Xs, white dots, or strange colored markings on trees lining all of these roadways. Please share this update with family, friends, and community group members who live in these areas as well, many towns are impacted--the more vigilant and alert we are, the better, just to be safe.
- Syosset-Woodbury Road, Syosset
- Cold Spring Road, Syosset
- Brush Hollow Road, Westbury
- Duck Pond Road, Locust Valley
- Piping Rock Road, Locust Valley and Glen Head
- Motor Avenue, Farmingdale
- No. Jerusalem Avenue, Levittown, East Meadow & North Merrick
- Hempstead Avenue, West Hempstead
- Searingtown Road, Manhasset
- Baldwin Road & Grand Avenue, Baldwin
- Central Avenue, IU Willets Road, Franklin Avenue, and New Hyde Park Road in the following areas: Valley Stream, North Hills, Franklin Square and New Hyde Park.
- Peninsula Boulevard and Merrick Road, in the following areas: Hempstead, Lakeview, and Lynbrook.
- Middle Neck Road, Great Neck Road, East Shore Road, and Beacon Hill Road, in the following areas: Great Neck, Russell Gardens, Kensington and Port Washington.
- Merrick Road, Valley Stream
- Clinton Street, Hempstead
- Clinton Road, Garden City
- Wolver Hollow Road, Glen Head and Upper Brookville
Additionally, we have asked the County DPW to halt any further tree related work in terms of replanting until they have a legitimate process in place to install appropriate trees, and have the certified trained arborists to oversee this work (there is no arborist on the payroll despite their earlier claims). Same with a plan for maintenance and care, because their replants (as shown in the earlier Facebook post) die on heavily trafficked roadways. We need substantial trees on this roadway if we actually want the trees to survive. Further, we would like to see an adequate replanting plan, the 1x1 replacement as promised by Legislators--as, the pits left in Syosset for future trees, for instance, are few in number and to boot, not even ADA compliant. We are also diligently working with the DPW and County Attorneys to get the County-level Tree Ordinance revised to prevent any further removal, and once we have a greater update, we will definitely post.
*And finally, thank you again. Whether you have signed the petition, come to a rally, donated your time, energy or means we thank you for joining us in these efforts.
