Judge Judy, on her nationally syndicated tv show, just advised a woman to stop feeding feral cats because they are creating a nuisance for her neighbors. That's not a great way to handle the situation and it's a divisive message to send to the viewing audience.. Cats are always there. Feeders bring them out of the shadows, and only then can we intervene to have them humanely trapped and neutered, thereby controlling the population in a reasonable way. Not feeding just leads to starvation and illness, does nothing to stem reproduction, is not a solution. The only reason there are so many cats at large is because people don't take responsibility for their pets; they let them out, abandon them, and most of all, don't neuter them. Thank goodness for the kindness of feeders and the diligence and out-of-pocket output of the many people who voluntarily dedicate themselves to solving this issue. This ought to be a government-sponsored undertaking. Judge Judy should use her high-profile position to raise awareness about this issue, not spread wrong-headed attitudes to set progress back.
