Don't let this dog killer escape justice - set a trial date!

In July of 2012, a Birmingham, Alabama lawyer slit his family dog's throat amid a bitter custody battle over "Rufus," the wife's beloved American Staffordshire Terrier and then texted a grotesque picture of the slain dog to his soon-to-be ex wife.

After a five-month investigation that included canine exhumation and intense investigation at a Florida animal forensics lab, in November 2012, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office announced felony charges against James Stewart Robinson, 45, for Cruelty to a Dog. According to court records in a domestic violence/harassment charge against Robinson, he texted the picture of Rufus with his throat slashed to his estranged wife, and then left a voicemail that said, "Your day is coming girl."

With Robinson (an attorney and federal judge's son) out on bond ever since the incident, finally, in May of 2015, the case has some movement. Unfortunately, the judge appointed to the case, Retired Judge John E. Rochester, is refusing to set a trial date and encouraging the Prosecutors to allow Robinson to plead down to a misdemeanor so that the case can be settled and a trial avoided. Faced with the violent nature and sheer cruelty of the crime, both the Prosecutors and Deputy Sheriff in charge of the investigation are sticking to their guns and refusing to allow Robinson a mere slap on the wrist by allowing him to plead down. But with the Judge refusing to set a trial date, he is standing in the way of Rufus getting his day in court.

Please let Judge Rochester know that pets are family members, and the murder of one should be punished appropriately, as a FELONY, not reduced to a misdemeanor. By signing this petition, you are asking Judge Rochester to respect the police finding of this crime as a felony and set a trial date.
