REQUEST TO MAKE MADA STREETS OF MYLAPORE / SRI KAPALI TEMPLE ZONE 'ONE WAY / OR A WALK WAY FOR SOME HOURS ONCE A WEEK
The Issue
The 3 mada streets around Sri Kapali Temple are part of a heritage zone and must be treated as such. Thousands of people from the city and India and the world visit it daily through out the year. This area is a showcase of our city. But traffic overload is causing immense problems.
The three mada streets must be made to be great walking and slow driving zones that make the visit a memorable one.
We suggest that the Chennai City Police introduce 'one way' in these streets so that the traffic flow is smooth and pedestrians walk freely too.
We are aware Chennai Corporation has a big plan to redesign this zone too. While we await that plan, the Police can start implementing this system.
The Police can also consider a WALK ONLY ZONE on a few days of the week for a few hours. This is a concept that is internationally employed in all heritage zones.
In doing so, the benefits are great - local residents get smooth access to their homes, more shoppers come here because they enjoy the window shopping benefits in a quiet zone and the area of old houses, temple, shops and quaint nooks are freely open to tourists too.
The Police may ear mark a Parking Zone outside this area. People must be encouraged to walk to this zone.
We are citizens of this area and around who support this plan and request the Traffic Police to implement it as early as possible.
