Dear Supporters, 

I want to thank you all for your support through sharing and signing this petition. You have helped get the word out to nearly 10,000 people and more will continue to be made aware of this inhumane proposal to kill seals and sea lions to serve the fishing industry.  

I'm happy to report that the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans Canada has responded for our request for more information. In their response, they have noted that transient killer whales rely on pinnipeds for food and that the "DFO does not currently employ broad-scale seal and sea lion cull programs as a means of managing pinniped populations."

They also confirmed that Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has not authorized the harvest of seals or sea lions by the Pacific Balance Pinniped Society. We thank the DFO for their response. 

This is good news for now. There is no evidence to support a large killing of pinnipeds to protect SRKWs, so there should be no justification for allowing one to start. We will continue to follow the issue and efforts by the Pacific Balance Pinniped Society to push the issue forward. 

Together, we can protect the seals and sea lions while making sure we address the anthropogenic (human) causes of the decline of SRKWs, salmon, and the well-being of the ocean.
