Dear Supporters,
Thank you for signing and sharing this petition. Your support has seen its numbers grow substantially is just a few days. This is just the beginning, but we are in it for the long haul and look forward to stopping this proposal to kill innocent seals and sea lions on the west coast.
We wanted to share with you the insights of a respect scientist and environmental advocate, David Suzuki, on this issue from a recent blog post he made. In it he says, "Sports fishing groups attribute chinook declines to seals and sea lions and are calling for culls. But blaming seals doesn't explain low chinook returns."
It has often been the tactic of animal use industries to place the blame on other animals to excuse terrible wildlife management policy. Now the fishing industry is blaming seals to protect the Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKWs). However, we all know, and the science supports, that it is human behaviour, especially the fishing industry, that has and continues to negatively impact SRKWs.
We need to stick to the facts: there is no evidence killing seals will save the Southern Resident Killer Whales or the salmon. There is no excuse for a seal slaughter and it must be opposed for the protection of marine life and their habitat.
Please continue to support this petition and our work to protect animals across Canada. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jordan Reichert
