Support a second theme middle school in DeKalb County

Support a second theme middle school in DeKalb County
The Issue
PETITION
for establishment of a theme middle school or schools in the DeKalb County School District Region 4 and/or Region 5 attendance area. A theme middle school for students in DeKalb County School District (DCSD) Region 4 and/or Region 5 would better serve students matriculating from elementary schools in those regions. Many parents in Regions 4 and 5 face challenges with theme middle school access. The proven success of theme schools in the DeKalb County School System warrants an opportunity for students in Regions 4 and 5 to have a theme middle school that is more accessible in proximity to where they reside.
Students from theme elementary schools must vie for one half of the total slots available at Champion Theme Middle School. This creates a waiting list at Champion Middle School and forces parents to take their children out of the DeKalb county schools or to send their children to non-theme middle schools which may not offer the same benefits for the student. Creating a theme middle school in Region 4 and/or 5 would allow for continuity of the academic rigor, and parental involvement provided within the theme school model.
The location of Champion Middle School in Stone Mountain requires that students not living in the area be transported by car or shuttled by bus from designated pick up locations. The proximity of Champion Middle School to those in Region 4 and Region 5 is generally not conducive for parental involvement or participating in extracurricular activities consistently. This is especially difficult when an engaged family has multiple children in multiple schools.
