Make Downtown Hollywood, FL a Pedestrian Mall

Make Downtown Hollywood, FL a Pedestrian Mall

The Issue

It is time once for all to save Downtown Hollywood and give it the recognition it deserves. Quite simply, Downtown Hollywood FL is an International Food Destination and is ripe to be a Pedestrian Mall.

There’s French, Indonesian, Chinese, Colombian, Puerto Rican, Indian, Peruvian, Mexican, Greek, American, Thai and Italian; just to name a few. You can get burgers, kebabs, mac and cheese, gyros, empanadas, quesadillas, steak, pizza, pad thai, mussels, bbq, noodles, pancakes, dessert, mofongo, curry, fish, vegetarian, rice and beans, salad, tacos, eggs, lasagna, and so much more. The possibilities are endless. Now granted some of these restaurants need to up their game a bit. But that's for another day.

Why City City Leaders, the Hollywood CRA and the Chamber of Commerce don't see this is a mystery and a failure. A huge failure. And as we return to whatever the new normal is after the "Plague of 2020" it's time for the people of South Florida to get excited about Downtown Hollywood.

And what better way than this....... let's make Hollywood Boulevard from Young Circle to Dixie Highway a Pedestrian Mall. Even if it is just evenings or weekends to start.

Think Lincoln Road. Or think Bourbon Street in the evening. Let's think big! Why not Hollywood? Hollywood seems to be afraid to take bold steps. Adding a few lights on the Boulevard doesn't disguise or hide the number of vacancies - that existed pre-Covid. We close some of the streets for a monthly Art Walk, why not go bigger? Why do Hollywood FL City Leaders continue to drag their feet on any type of change?

Why do businesses open and close on the Boulevard so quickly? Why was the CIRC residence such a failure, and we now have a building that was supposed to feed downtown with new life and customers turned into an empty vacation rental?

Downtown Hollywood, FL should be a destination. It's time Hollywood Leaders take the bold steps and do what is necessary to save our city and make downtown a place where people want to flock. Let's send this message to City Leaders. Immediately converting downtown to a Pedestrian Mall would be the driving factor for their Vision 25. We don't have until 2025 to save downtown. It's time for them to go big!
