Petition updateSave cash - our right to access and use cash must be protected by lawCash in crisis - Banks abandon 1200 towns, Tasmania shuts down, floods cripple communities

The big four banks have left more than 1200 towns and suburbs without branches and over 900 towns and suburbs without ATMs.

Queenslanders reliant on cashless welfare cards can't buy food because floods are wiping out EFTPOS and cashless payment systems.

Yesterday, Tasmanian EFTPOS and internet services were disrupted when connecting cables to the mainland were cut. Businesses were forced to shut and people were left without access to payments.

National Australia Bank has now backflipped on its new policy of rejecting cash deposits in bank branches to credit card accounts but the general trend is continuing. Our access to cash is threatened as banks withdraw services, branches and ATMs from communities everywhere.

Meanwhile bank profits continue to balloon. Commonwealth Bank recently reported a half-year net cash profit of $4.75 billion, up 23 per cent. Card, phone and EFTPOS payments deliver fees and surcharges to banks while cash is free to use.

This is more urgent than ever before. In times of crisis and natural disasters, only cash is reliable. Banks must provide access to cash for communities to be able to access essential goods and services.

Thank you

Jason
